Mawanella brick-bridge
One of the highlight of Mawanella is the brick bridge.
The two remaining bridge dating back to the British era are the Pilimathalawa, Nanuoya bridge and the Mawanella brick bridge. The Mawanella brick bridge was completed between 1832 - 1833. It was built by captain Brown. It is the only brick bridge still used for vehicle traffic and is the oldest brick bridge Sri Lanka. And also the longest and largest brick bridge on the colombo Kandy main road.
The bridge is to meters long with 4 arches and is made entirely of bricks. The length of one arch is 15 meters. What is special is that this bridge has never been repaired since its construction. In the past, the bridge is Ceylon developed tea and coffee plantation industries in the upcountry. The bridge needed a road system to transport their crops.
